our trip to Texas

Our trip was fun. We saw many interesting things. We ate at some great restaurants. We soaked up a different place. Miranda was so good. It can't quite be explained how good she was...no meltdowns, little fussing, very little whining. She was friendly and sweet. And our quest to grow her bangs has made a turning point--she starting putting her hair back in barrettes or pigtails every day.

On our drive south, we drove through Indiana, where we saw Rob's mom's hometown. Then we headed into Kentucky and the Land Between the Lakes. We expected more lakes and less land. At the top of the area, in Grand Rivers, we ate at Miss Patti's, which was cute and fun and perfect for a rest stop. And then right around the Tennessee border, we saw an Elk and Bison refuge.

They were that close. We obeyed the restiction to stay in the car.

Tennessee brought us to Memphis. And a cruise by Graceland. After that, we headed across Arkansas. This was marred by some rain, and the interstae was so boring after our jaunt between the Lakes. Hot Springs was amazing. We want to go back and soak up some local culture.

Miranda had been talking about going to Texas for a month. She was getting pretty tired of our journey that didn't have any Texas. So when we got to Texarkana, we were all relieved. We did the 2 things everyone who visits Texarkana must do.

We have the border picture, one foot on each side. Miranda understood that she was in Texas and she actually refused to go back into Arkansas, even for a kitsch-y photo.

And we went to Bryce's Cafeteria. A cafeteria, but nicer.

We slept in Sulphur Springs, Texas. Rob found the very cool Coleman Park.

Miranda and Rob climbed Imagination Mountain.

Then we got to Waco. And William and April. They fed us and entertained us and we enjoyed their company very much.

And Miranda could summon her inner diva to come out in the safety of a pink boa.

We took the requisite Texas wildflower photo. Awww..

We made a visit to the Waco Suspension Bridge.

Our trip back was less eventful. Oklahoma was just a bit boring. We did see a well marked speed trap. Missouri was more fun. We enjoyed Lake of the Ozarks and think it may be a Wisconsin Dells rival. And then St. Louis--we didn't ride the Arch to time constraints and bad weather. We did get to ride around the Hill. We stayed a step ahead of the rain in Illinois. We stopped by Abe Lincoln's house. We had a terrible rainstorm that last 45 minutes on the road. And we just barely made it to the gas station with about a quarter gallon left--thank goodness we were 10 blocks from home.

Yes, those are cowboy boots Miranda is wearing in Texas. She still wears them to school here in Wisconsin and hates to wear them with socks.
