Henry

Henry is walking. Across rooms. By himself. Wonderbar!!!

We're heading off to Texas. So in addition to the pictures I'll stash in my suitcase, I'll put up some fairly recent pictures of Henry. Becasue I am going to miss him. And he'll be pretty busy chasing dogs and tipping water dishes and changing the channel on the TV to miss me too much. I hope.

happy birthday to me

Friday was my birthday. I ruined Miranda and Henry's surprise birthday party for me by slamming the van sliding door on two of my fingers. Left hand, but the really useful fingers. After much bleeding, Mom took me to the doctor's office. The urgent care doctor (much to my surprise I could see him before I could see my regular doctor) decided I needed 3 stitches on my middle finger.

I arrived late at the party. I can't swim for ten days. It really doesn't hurt, as long as I try not to use that finger. 29 will be a wild ride.

eat him

This morning the kids woke up before we did. Henry started climbing on us. Miranda came into our room. But the bad parents had stayed up too late playing on their respective computers. So we were tired. Rob was trying to avoid opening his eyes. Miranda was determined. Rob was obstinate. He said something silly. And Miranda said, "Eat him, Henry. Now."

Henry obliged by biting him. The parents woke up. And another day started.

are you a fan of Kevin Smith too?

Miranda has been working on writing and spelling her name. So far she has Mira. And then a classmate showed her how to make a capital A. And she started writing MiraA.

She has been flirting with adopting a nickname, Mira, because she can spell it. She does respond when you call her Mira. But she used to respond to Pickles. And she giggles about it too.

She learned her full name was Miranda Ratayczak before school started. She says it all together as one word, practically one syllable. The R is sort of flubbed into a B and I swear I hear a V in there too. Of course the T sounds like D.

While writing her name she claims she is writing Miranda Day. It looks like Mira PAMH. I ask, Miranda Jane? Miranda Ratayczak (for the family--sorry, we go with an all A pronounciation of the last name. Ra tay (rhymes with day) zak)

She insists she says Miranda Day. And all I can think of is Jay and Silent Bob, and Jay saying "Morris Day and the F***ing Time."

The Otter Show

All week long, Rob has promised Miranda he was taking her to the Auto Show on Friday. She was quite excited. We chalked this up to doing something fun with Papa. (Well, Rob assumed a love of cars was hereditary and I assumed a dislike of auto shows was hereditary or should be.)

This morning on the ride to school I asked Miranda where she was going this afternoon. She said, "The auto show."

I asked, "What is an auto?"

She mumbled something that sounded like "auto auto."

I said an auto is a car, or a truck or a van. An "automobile."

Miranda said, "seals swim in the water" and giggled. It was like I was saying the silliest thing ever.

"Not a seal, an automobile. Not an automoseal," I said.

She was nonplussed.

When she arrived at the Auto Show this afternoon, in front of hundreds of vehicles, Miranda asked, "where are the autos?"

Rob said there were autos all around her.

"No, otters swim in the water," and she ran in circles around Rob pretending to swim.

Maybe a dislike of auto shows is hereditary. And wouldn't you like to attend an otter show?
