Texas here we come
Miranda has become a fan of a new Nick series called The Backyardigans. I think we all have. It's cute and the music is better than just about any other kid's TV show. In each episode, the kids play in their backyard and imagine they are off on some adventure. One of our current favorites is Riding the Range.
In this episode, Cowboy Tyrone heads to Texas for a hoe down. Three other characters are chasing a bandit who stole one of their ropes (a jump rope actually). They ride horses down to Texas and sing a lot.
We're going to Texas (all except Henry) in April. Miranda thinks we are going to need to ride horses. We're visiting William and April. She told me yesterday that William and April wouldn't need to ride horses, because they are already in Texas.
It will be a fun trip.

what a weekend
We had a full weekend. The excitement really started on Friday, when Miranda decided she would choose not to wear clothes. She has been rather rambling in her outfits lately. Seven pants changes. And socks. Oh my, socks are just a nightmare. These are too tight. These are too loose. She has to roll the socks up to then slip them over her toes, but if she rolls too many times, she can't get them on her toes. She then gets mad. And I get frustrated. And she won't accept help. And if I can avoid screaming, we just leave without her wearing socks.
Socks spilled over into pants on Friday. She was lucky enough to have a friend over in the afternoon. She played the entire time in her underwear. It was a bit much. This was the child I was going to take to a baby shower in the 44th floor of the Hancock building? And then out to "arguably the 7th best French restaurant in Chicago?"
She did amazingly well. She wore pajamas. She did put on a too-small dress in place of her pajama top by the time we reached the restaurant. She looked more eccentric than truly headed for bed. Henry enjoyed the height, or at least the immense windows. He would climb up to the window and bump it with his head. He was all smiles. Miranda was sweet.
At dinner, we heard Jonny Frigo (well-known jazz violinist), who was amazing. (this was a surprise to our party.) And the children were not terrible. They were quiet, as long as we kept the baguettes coming. And took some walks. And high tailed it out of there as soon as our diner was finis.
On the drive back to Milwaukee, we went through a heavy winter storm. Cars in the ditch. Ambulances and state troopers all over. It feels good to be home. And I am so tired.

happy birthday
Happy Birthday to Henry.
Happy Birthday to Henry.
Happy Birthday dear Henry.
Happy Birthday to you!
He's made it to One Year! He's under the weather, again. Let's hope the cough gets better and not worse. He forgets to hold on and takes a step now and then. He says Mamamama. And he has the cutest froggy cake for his birthday.

how can a nap go so wrong?
Miranda fell asleep quite early on Monday night. She woke up around 5 and was cranky by 7. Have you seen a sock meltdown? Not pretty. She fell asleep on the way home from Target around 2:30. We bought less stressful socks. And she decided after we left the store that I should go back inside the store and exchange her Matchbox car for a different Matchbox car. Wasn't happening, so she cried and fell promptly asleep.
Her nap was glorious. Almost 3 hours. Deep sleep. She woke up happy. But when it came time to go to bed, she wasn't tired. She wasn't interested. She wasn't even whiny or fussy. Determined and funny. When she couldn't squeeze an extra story in, she asked for a snack. Just a little snack...and she giggled when I would say no. She was a well-rested attorney making a late bedtime case in the court of Mom Needs Her Sleep. She normally starts going to bed at 7:15 or so. Last night, knowing she had napped, we didn't even try until almost 8. She held out until about 10:30. At least that's when I fell asleep.
